OCTOBERFEST COMES TO DOWNTOWN Our next auction to support RI’s ?ght to ?nally eradicate polio and to help meet our goal of $1,000 to match the Gates Foundation’s gift to RI will be for 2 Club Level, Center Ice seats at the Sharks v. St. Louis Blues game on Thursday, Nov. 6. ??? Sharks Tickets to Fight Polio Mark your calendar and join in the fun on Saturday and Sunday October 18th and 19th as downtown Campbell celebrates Octoberfest. This fun celebration of “brats and beer” also features a great food booth put on by our club under the able leadership of Bill Ellington. We’ll roast fresh corn on the cob, grill up hot dogs and sausages, maybe even fry up some garlic fries, and offer cold drinks all to support our club’s many worthwhile activities. This year we will focus much of our giving to support the Digital Villages project in conjunction with our fellow Rotarians in India, various projects in support of EMQ , books for Rosemary School and other local projects still in the works. Working this event is a great way to get to know your fellow Campbell Rotarians, enjoy the festivities of a great street fair, and help raise funds for worthwhile projects. He even took the body fat measurement of our President! The annual 9/11 Memorial Blood Drive, organized by Jerry Cummings and the American Red Cross netted a record number of donations this year. With donors coming from Robinson Oil, EMQ and even Campbell’s Lions Club, we were able to cross over the 50 pints mark. Several “walk-in” clients also helped us reach the record level of donations. Club member Neil Reid, in photo, was the ?rst member of our club to donate on Friday, and was the 2nd appointment of the morning. Other club members also were on hand to donate, including ?rst time blood donor, Delbar Jahanian. (See photos on page 2.) The whole process takes a little over an hour, including reading the educational information, going over your health history, actual donation (about 10 minutes) and then the rest time in the canteen. The ARC even gives you juice and cookies! And, you have the knowledge that you are helping to save lives right here in the Bay Area. Family Picnic, 9/21 DON PAYTON, FIRE FIGHTER z Board Highlights Discussed a few Community Service possibilities. Agreed to solicit volunteer to be Club Historian. Discussed Club Foundation’s Investments. California was on ?re this summer. One local hero who took part in the ?ght against this natural disaster is Don Payton (husband of member Janine). Don is a City of Sunnyvale Public Safety Of?cer, and as such was deployed to combat the Butte County Fire in Northern California. Even though Don is an experienced ?re ?ghter in an urban setting, he relayed to the club that he learned a great deal about ?ghting ?res in the wild. In some cases, letting a ?re burn was the best strategy, Don learned. Don’s crew left Santa Clara County the day after the Butte ?re started and while in Butte County also assisted in putting out a local ?re in Oroville. ??? Blood Drive is this Friday. Be a Donor! Don’t Forget Our 9/11 Blood Drive San Jose Sharks TV play-byplay announcer, Randy Hahn was the main speaker at last Tuesday’s regular club meeting. Randy let us in on some behind the scenes news, such as, former Shark stand out, Jeff Friesen is trying out for the team this year! Mr. Hahn related stories from the early days of the Sharks franchise at the Cow Palace in South San Francisco and of the excitement of moving to the brand new San Jose Arena in 1993. The “Shark Tank” has been home to the Sharks ever since. Randy also reminded the group of some of the outstanding moments of Sharks history, as when Jamie Baker scored the winning goal in game 7 of the ?rst round of playoffs against the mighty Detroit Red Wings, eliminating them and catapulting the San Jose Sharks into the national headlines. Randy was also nice enough to bring some Sharks memorabilia to raf?e off to the crowd. Shown in this photo are Sharks fans Jerry and Patti Cummings along with Randy Hahn.
