Everything Old is New Again?

The club previously known as RotaryCSJw has been discussing/considering dropping the “San Jose West” from our club name and being just the Rotary Club of Campbell.

The reason for the change is to better identify us as the club of the City of Campbell; of course there would be no change in the area from which we can draw members.

President Jerry Cummings would like to get a consensus from the members on Tuesday, March 25. If you are not going to be at the meeting and feel strongly that we should not make the change, please contact Jerry.

CAMPBELL-SAN JOSE WEST ROTARY? MARCH 18, 2008 www.RotaryCSJw.org NEWSLETTER ? ? One of the aspects of Rotary International that is at once the most impactful around the world and (to this Rotarian) the most confusing is The Rotary Foundation (TRF). This article is an attempt to share some new found understanding about our role in contributing to and in bene?ting from TRF. ? First of all the mission of TRF is “To enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of Health, the support of Education and the alleviation of Poverty.” The way the Foundation does this is by securing donations from Rotarians around the world, carefully investing those donations, and supporting Rotary projects at the local and the international level. ? There are three ways to give to TRF. The Annual Programs Fund (APF–Rotary does like those acronyms!). The APF may be the most well known and common way Rotarians contribute to TRF. Clubs have goals of giving attached to this Fund. Typically, Rotarians are asked to help sustain this fund with contributions of $100 per year. “Double Sustainers” are those who contribute $200/year. There are other designations for those who are able to contribute more. These contributions go toward a members Paul Harris Fellow designation. APF funds come back to the club for use in our local and international projects. ? The second way to contribute is via the Permanent Fund. Funds contributed here also go toward a members Paul Harris Fellow status. More on this fund in a later edition. ? The third way of giving is called Restricted Giving, whereby a Rotarians donation is given for a speci?c cause, such as Polio Eradication. These funds count toward a members Paul Harris Fellow status, and are used solely for the program designated. They do not come back to the club for local projects or for a club’s international project. COMING EVENTS April 2: Area 8 Cabinet Meeting Apr 11-13: District Conference @ SJ DoubleTree Apr 21: District Golf Tournament May 21: District Assembly, Jun 15-18: RI Conference, Los Angeles Jun 15-20: RYLA @ Camp Campbell TRF Refresher Board Highlights 1)Our club is looking into becoming a sponsor for high school students going to Enterprise Leadership Conference next year. 2)We are also pursuing the establishment of an Interact Club at Westmont High along with the Los Gatos Morning Club. 3)We continue to look into the possibility of providing a wide screen TV for EMQ’s large meeting room. —————Membership: 43 and counting! ? Area 8 Speech Contest

RotaryCSJw hosted the District 5170 Area 8 speech contest at our luncheon today.

Our winner was Janhavi Athavale from Monte Vista High School (also from the Cupertino Rotary Club). She reminded us that “All we really needed to know we learned in Kindergarten.”

Thank you to all who volunteered their services to make it run so well. Delbar Jahanian and Sue Klear did a fabulous job of greeting. Carl Middione, Bill Highley, Ravi Chari and Jim Morlena had a very difficult job as judges, but they all rose to the task. Thanks again to Jerry Scott for timing and to Neil and Marc for doing the big math with me standing over them.

The next step is the Regional at the Los Gatos Morning Rotary Club on April 2. It would be great to have some of us there to cheer on the students.

In addition, Paul Pinza (the speech teacher from Westmont High School) has invited us to participate as volunteers in a regional contest later this Spring. Read more
