Family Finding by EMQ

Although absent herself, Bettina Kohlbrenner set-up two of her EMQ colleagues to present their ground-breaking approach to re-uniting foster children with “lost” family members.

Brad Norman, LCSW, is the Director of the Family Partnership Institute of EMQ Children & Family Services. Gerry Rodriguez, Ph.D., is the Associate Director of the EMQ Family Partnership Institute. Together, they provide statewide and national training and consultation regarding family-centered, strength-based services for high-need youth and their families.

Believe it or not, the average foster child spends time in more than 40 foster homes before leaving the system as adults. As Brad presented it, “We have children living with strangers at great cost.” The conecpt of “Family Finding” helps increase connections with families, providing a stronger sense of self and community for displaced kids.

Brad is currently working with Catholic Community Services of Western Washington (the Family Finding pioneers) to develop a Practice Guide for Family Search and Engagement, and Gerry is an active member of the National Wraparound Initiative Advisory Group.

To tell us more about Saratoga Federated Church‘s activities in support of AMOR Ministries, Bob Yager introduced Tim Galleher and Jason Roeder, youth pastors from Bob’s church.

They told us about annual trips the Church community makes to Tijuana, Mexico, to build houses for less fortunate families south of the border. Staying in group camps (mostly tent cities) and working tirelessly each day, church volunteers from Saratoga have constructed 55 homes over the past few years.

For more information, contact Tim or Jason at the Church.

CSJw Rotarians Bill Highley and Rex Osborn are volunteer docents at The TECH Museum of Innovation for a few years, so it was time for our Club to learn more about San Jose’s biggest tourist attraction.

The TECH seeks to inspire the innovator in everyone, with a series of exhibits, informative programs, outreach efforts, and community activities. Founded in 1978, The TECH is now one of the largest museums in Silicon Valley, with more than 500,000 annual visitors. In conjunction with universities and international agencies, The TECH sponsors competitions and laureate awards annually, including the Mars Crater Tech Challenge, scheduled for April 2007.
