Citizen Schools in Campbell
Once we dragged him from the microphone, Bob Carlson introduced Kristen Robertson, the local director of Citizen Schools at Campbell Middle School.
Citizen Schools is a leading national education initiative that partners with middle schools to expand the learning day for children in low-income communities across the country through afterschool and expanded learning time programs. The organization mobilizes a second shift of afternoon educators, who provide academic support, leadership development, and “apprenticeships”—hands-on projects taught by volunteers from business and civic organizations. At 31 middle schools in seven states across the country, Citizen Schools students develop the skills they need to succeed in high school, college, the workforce, and civic life.
Citizen Schools extends the academic day for students, to add rigor and learning beyond the regular school day. Volunteers like Bob extend the day until 6:00 pm for students who want to learn new subjects like robotics, cooking, performance, and leadership.
She specifically discussed the Apprenticeship Program organizing at CMS, a recent version of which helped students learn about advertising and put this knowledge into action by creating, launching and measuring a “Say no to bullying, Say yes to tacos” advertising campaign.
