Octoberfest a big success

Newsletter — Oct 23 2007Bill Ellington and his mighty band of volunteers manned a booth at downtown Campbell’s Octoberfest over the weekend. Thanks to pleasant weather and hardy work crews a good time was had by all. Early reports are that Saturday’s business was so good, we covered our expenses so all of Sunday’s sales should show up in the “profit� column.

October Board Meeting

At the October meeting of our Board of Directors, the Board decided to:

  • Donate $250 to the local RotarAct Group toward a “Giraffe bedâ€? for pre-mature infants.
  • December 8th as the Holiday Party date
  • Decided to increase the number of club assemblies starting in January
  • Decided to have a “Visioning Meetingâ€? for the club, with facilitators from the District, probably in January.

Garden Project at EMQ

Continuing with RotaryCSJw’s volunteer and philanthropic work with EMQ Children & Family Services, club members are invited to participate in a special project at EMQ’s Los Gatos facility:

EMQ’s Children’s Garden Project
November 7th, 2007 from 4-6 pm.
EMQ Los Gatos Campus, 499 Loma Alta Avenue.

Help finish installation of a sustainable garden for EMQ’s residential children. Creating a garden will not only be fun and educational for the children, but will have therapeutic benefits as well.

Come help plant winter vegetables and make mosaic stepping stones with EMQ’s children or donate materials needed to the project. Continue reading Garden Project at EMQ

Juvenile Court Judge Katherine Lucero

On October 30, please join us early for this fascinating program …

Juvenile Court Judge Katherine Lucero will speak to our club on Tuesday, October 30. Judge Lucero is the Juvenile Court Judge supporting Family Court, and will discuss how the Court tries to keep the children in their home, even though 80% of such court cases are the result of alcohol or drug abuse.

Judge Lucero would like to speak at the beginning of the meeting, rather than after the club business as she has to return to court. All RotaryCSJw members are asked to arrive early to sit for lunch in time for the program to start at 12:30!

Middle East Perspectives

Rick Davis presented Charlie Kirschner from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)who presented an educational update on the Middle East situation with respect to Israeli/Palestinian relations.

He touched on the ongoing Palestinian situation, specially the Hamas insurgency, and also discussed the potential for nuclear proliferation in Iran.

Moreland Pumpkin Patch

Janine and RaviRotaryCSJw’s support of the Moreland Educational Foundation continues this month, with a volunteer opportunity! Join Janine Payton at the 5th Annual Pumpkin Patch at the Moreland Woods, benefiting the foundation.

Also, if anyone would like to volunteer a couple of hours helping to sell pumpkins they can contact Janine! She really needs help on opening weekend- – Oct 12, 13 and 14!

Rotary is now addressing these and other tragedies related to overpopulation and unsustainable development. In the last several years, over 100 Matching Grants and larger 3-H projects have been completed that address this challenge.
