Turgut & Birsen Gökyiğit

Our club finally had an official opportunity to meet our long-time Turkish Rotarian partners Turgut & Birsen GökyiÄŸit, who are visiting several clubs in our area as part of District 5170’s “Partners in Service” program.

Turgut presented a thorough slide show, sharing historical and cultural highlights of his native Turkey (and the Anatolian Peninsula), and he also provided additional details about the many service projects completed in cooperation with RotaryCSJw and other clubs, including a Family Planning educational project and installations of a Burn Bed and a Neotatal ICU Incubator in a hospital in Istanbul. He also highlighted our most recent project, a $160,000 3-H Grant from The Rotary Foundation for construction of clean drinking water facilities in areas hard-hit by a major earthquake in 1999.

We hope to soon be adding a downloadable version of Turgut’s slide presentation. Check back if you are interested. Continue reading Turgut & Birsen GökyiÄŸit

Holy Land, Whose Land?

Holy Land Whose LandToday we heard from author Dorothy Drummond, whose book Holy Land, Whose Land? discusses the history of religious and political strife in the Middle East.

Dorothy shared her “history through maps” and explained the religious views of the various factions who disagree over the Holy Land.

As Dorothy Drummond takes her readers through four thousand years of history – from Abraham to the present–gradually the realization builds: It is with strong and deeply held feelings that two peoples today are pitted against each other in agonizing conflict over a piece of real estate no bigger than the state of New Jersey.

As readers follow the author in unraveling complex Holy Land threads, they have help along the way: thirty-three maps, nineteen photos, graphs, a side-bar chronology, an extensive glossary, sources, and index.

Dorothy has also authored or co-authored a variety of other books, including a few “World Cultures” textbooks. … Dorothy’s other books on
