Mexico “Alternate Transport” Project

Cecelia Babkirk has received word that Rotary International has completed the project to fund new “alternative transport vehicles.” Our collaboration with the Rotary Club of Tecamachalco has provided seven new units capable of allowing wheelchair-bound drivers to navigate difficult roads. Congratulations, Rotarians!

Club Assembly

Mysteriously, the Mayor of San Jose was a “no-show” and we had a productive and entertaining Club Assembly instead.

New Phone#: 408-287-8119

Thanks to Bill Ellington for hosting and supporting our new phone number.
This number is a place to direct prospective new members who would like to
contact the club. Future marketing efforts, including our website, a
upcoming radio spot, and our new brochure will feature this number. Please
make a note of it.

Surfing Rotarians

Mark your calendars for May 14, a day to celebrate Rotary in Santa Cruz with the rest of District 5170. Festivities will include surfing, a 10k walk/run, a BBQ picnic, plus fun at the Boardwalk. Follow the link for more information.

Campbell City Manager

On January 18, we welcomed Bob Kass, the Director of Public Works and Interim City Manager for the City of Campbell. Bob discussed several public and private projects currently underway in Campbell, including new townhome developments (Water Tower and Fung Lum), a new suite hotel east of downtown, shopping center facade improvements, park improvements, and the VTA Vasona project.

With appropriate remorse, Bob declined to support a casino within the city limits of Campbell, and he deftly avoided our repeated membership overtures. :-)

EMQ Says “Thanks”

We have received a great letter of thanks from EMQ for the toys and stuffed animals we donated as part of our Christmas Party last month. Please take a moment to read the EMQ Letter.

Rotary in India

San Jose Rotarian Ramesh Hariharan spoke to our club today about the ongoing collaborative programs between the San Jose Rotary Club and the Rotary Club of Karaikal, India.

The recent Tsunami disaster in south Asia has highlighted the valuable work that Rotary Clubs perform across the world. Since 2001, the SJ Rotary Club has sponsored a Rotaplast trip, purchased Indian-made wheelchairs, and donated hand-powered tricycles to people in need in Karaikal. Because of this ongoing relationship, the two clubs are now discussing new ways to help the citizens of India, with long-range solutions that address needs of the people affected by the Tsunami.

The San Jose club also maintains relationships with clubs in Paraguay, Thailand, and Venezuela.

Tina Bernal in the news …

Our own Tina Bernal was featured in a recent article acknowledging the YMCA of Santa Clara Valley as a grant recipient in support of fitness programs for kids. Read the entire article from the Willow Glen Resident.
